Sydney Shoot For "The Great Gatsby"

Acccording to reports, Australian director Baz Luhrmann's Bazmark Films will start shooting Warners 3D adaptation of author F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" in Sydney and New South Wales, Australia this summer, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan.

Pre-production begins in March with 17 weeks of filming scheduled for August, followed by 30 weeks of post.

Mulligan ("An Education") will play the lead 'Daisy' opposite DiCaprio ("Inception") as 'Gatsby' and Toby Maguire ("Spider-Man") as 'Carraway'.

"The Great Gatsby" was first published April 10, 1925, set on Long Island's North Shore and in New York City during the summer of 1922.

As a critique of the 'American Dream', the novel takes place following the First World War with American society enjoying unprecedented levels of prosperity during the 'roaring' 1920s as the economy soared. At the same time, Prohibition, the ban on the sale and manufacture of alcohol as mandated by the Eighteenth Amendment, made millionaires out of bootleggers.

"...'Nick Carraway' is a young bachelor from a Midwestern family, who graduates from Yale in 1915. After fighting in The Great War he settles in New York City to learn the bond business. Nick rents a small bungalow between two mansions in 'West Egg', a wealthy community on Long Island Sound. Across the bay is 'East Egg', inhabited by the 'old aristocracy', including 'Tom' and 'Daisy Buchanan'. Tom is a dilettante and Daisy, Nick's second cousin, although engaging and attractive, is pampered and superficial with a largely ignored three-year-old daughter.

"Soon Nick and the wealthy, mysterious 'Jay Gatsby' strike up a friendship following an invite to one of Gatsby's lavish parties attended by hundreds of guests. Eventually Gatsby confides to Nick that he was always in love with Daisy, a revelation that leads to sex, betrayal and murder..."
